Advantages of Virtual ECUs Implementing vECUs within the validation framework provides several strategic advantages:
- Shift-Left Testing: vECUs enable developers to perform functional testing as soon as the initial code or models are generated. This “Shift-Left” approach ensures that software components are verified long before the first physical hardware sample is manufactured.
- High-Level Parallelization: Unlike physical test benches, virtual environments can be instantiated in the cloud. This allows for massive parallel execution of test suites, reducing regression testing time from days to hours.
- Deterministic Simulation: vECUs provide a fully controlled environment. Testers can pause execution, manipulate internal variables, and inject faults that might be dangerous or impossible to replicate on a physical test track or HiL rig.
- Cost Efficiency: Reducing the dependency on physical HiL rigs lowers capital expenditure (CAPEX) and maintenance costs. It also minimizes the logistical overhead of distributing hardware to global development teams.
