HIL and SDV Architecture

Hardware in the Loop test has existed for a number of years and has continually evolved. HIL has always enabled engineers to validate earlier, quicker, and more reliably. Over time, the expectation for HIL has transitioned from simple models with basic IO with pre-defined configurations to complex simulations of plant and subcomponents. Now, software simulation should mimic highly realistic virtual environments, essentially acting as a digital twin to complete systems under test.

Recent technological trends in connectivity have also introduced further complexities relating to cloud integration and software validation workflows. An effective modern HIL solution must be highly modular and use connected approaches so that reuse between cloud-based SIL platforms and HIL systems are seamless. This approach is backed by standardization bodies such as the NCAP and Euro NCAP which see the advantage of enabling virtual testing.
